The Accidental Stain Test

Back in March one of our contractors completed a Centry TuffTRACK concrete polish installation at a 15,000 square foot Loftwall facility in Dallas, Texas. The before and after pictures of this project can be seen on www.centryconcretecare.com/processes. I received a call from the facility manager a few months later and they wanted us to come back and stain the bathrooms and top with our (ISG) Integrated Stain Guard. It was a small job and decided to do it myself and make a weekend out of it. As I was finishing up the men's room, I accidentally knocked over a red solo cup full of concrete stain onto the previously polished showroom floor and did not notice it for at least 15 minutes. Once I looked at the spill I figured either I was gong to be redoing a 5,000 square foot showroom or our (ISG) Integrated Stain Guard had even greater stain blocking properties than we previously thought. During the testing phase of this product we primarily focused on repelling food acids, dirt, grime and oils because those staining agents are very common where polished concrete is specified. Looking back, it would have been a powerful demonstration if Centry (ISG) blocked a product that's actually chemically engineered to stain concrete. Hence, the Accidental Stain Test was born.


The material was BEHR 100% acrylic dark grey concrete stain and it dwelled on the polished concrete surface for at least 20 minutes before I could wipe it up. I got a water dampened rag and wiped up in stain and to my surprise we had ZERO stain penetration. It wiped up in less than a minute and looked like the day it was polished. This lead me to recreate this scenario in a lab and as predicted it was repeatable. I added my findings to our stain test result flyer. As chemists and product developers we try to think of everything but always miss something. The Accidental Stain Test was just that and reminds me of the James Joyce quote. "Mistakes are the Portal to Discovery"
